What We Do — Gastroenterology
Fluoroscopy / Barium Studies
Dynamic X-ray using contrast (barium or water-soluble): esophagus, stomach, duodenum, small intestine, barium enema.
- Purpose: swallowing difficulties, reflux, pain, bowel movement disorders, suspected stricture/ulcer
- Preparation: fasting 6–8 h (varies by exam). For barium enema: sometimes laxative the day before
- Procedure & duration: 10–30 min depending on the area; real-time image series
- After: stay hydrated; pale stools may occur for 24–48 h
- Risks (rare): low radiation, constipation; very rare reaction to contrast
Colonoscopy
Examination of the entire colon with an endoscope; polyp removal and biopsies possible, with light sedation if needed.
- Purpose: colorectal cancer screening, polyps, bleeding, pain, bowel habit changes, IBD monitoring
- Preparation: low-residue diet 24–48 h + bowel prep the day before; anticoagulant adjustments if required
- Procedure & duration: 30–45 min; monitored in recovery room
- After: possible bloating; escort required if sedated; preliminary report same day, biopsy results in a few days
- Risks (rare): bleeding or perforation (<1/1000), especially after polyp removal
Gastroscopy (Upper Endoscopy)
Inspection of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum; biopsies if needed.
- Purpose: reflux (GERD), heartburn, epigastric pain, anemia, vomiting, upper GI bleeding, Barrett’s esophagus screening
- Preparation: fasting 6–8 h (solids and liquids)
- Procedure & duration: 10–15 min; local throat anesthetic and/or light sedation
- After: temporary throat discomfort; do not drive same day if sedated
- Risks (rare): discomfort, minor bleeding, very rare perforation
Virtual Colonoscopy (CT Colonography)
CT imaging of the colon after air/CO₂ insufflation, without endoscope or sedation.
- Benefits: fast exam, return to activities same day
- Limitations: no polyp removal or biopsies; if abnormality is found, a standard colonoscopy is required
- Preparation: similar to colonoscopy (diet + bowel prep)
- Procedure & duration: 15–20 min on CT table; low radiation
- Indications: screening when conventional colonoscopy is incomplete or contraindicated
