What is Gastroscopy For?
An endoscopic exam of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum to diagnose or treat:
- Reflux and heartburn (GERD), epigastric pain, nausea/vomiting
- Upper digestive bleeding, anemia, or unexplained weight loss
- Ulcer, gastritis, screening for Barrett’s esophagus
- Suspected Helicobacter pylori (testing and biopsies if needed)
Preparation
- Fasting 6–8 h (solids and liquids)
- Bring your medication list; adjustment of certain blood thinners as advised
- Arrange for an escort if sedation is planned
- Duration: 10–15 minutes
- Local throat anesthetic and/or light sedation
- A thin endoscope is inserted through the mouth; biopsies may be taken if needed
- Short monitoring period in recovery room
After the Exam
- Temporary sore throat or bloating may occur
- Do not drive the same day if sedated
- Gradual return to normal diet as instructed
Results
- Preliminary report provided the same day
- Biopsy results sent to you and your physician as soon as available, with a care plan
Risks (Rare)
- Discomfort, minor bleeding, reaction to sedation
- Perforation: extremely rare
Relative Contraindications
- Severe uncorrected coagulation disorders
- Cardiorespiratory instability — to be evaluated case by case by the physician
