Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy

What is a Colonoscopy for?

A colonoscopy is an endoscopic examination of the colon and rectum that helps detect and treat:

  • Polyps and colorectal cancer
  • Bleeding, anemia, abdominal pain, bowel movement disorders
  • Monitoring of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Follow-up after polyp removal or with family history

How is the exam performed?

  • Duration: 30 to 45 minutes
  • Light sedation possible (if needed)
  • An endoscope is inserted through the rectum to visualize the mucosa; biopsies and polyp removal can be done during the same session
  • Short recovery period in the recovery room

Preparation (essential)

  • Low-residue diet 24–48 hours before the exam
  • Bowel cleansing (prep laxative) the day before — often with a “split dose” regimen
  • Fasting according to instructions provided
  • Medications: adjustment of anticoagulants/antiplatelets under medical advice; bring a full list of your medications
  • Transport: if sedation is given, arrange for an escort and do not drive the same day

After the exam

  • Bloating and gas may last a few hours
  • Gradual return to diet according to instructions
  • Light bleeding may occur after biopsy/polyp removal
  • If you experience significant pain, fever, or heavy bleeding: seek medical attention immediately

Results and Follow-up

  • Preliminary report provided the same day
  • Pathology (biopsy) results sent as soon as available, with follow-up plan
  • Screening interval: depends on risk profile and results (often every 5–10 years if normal)

Risks (rare)

  • Bleeding (especially after polyp removal)
  • Perforation
  • Reaction to sedation
➡️ The physician will assess the benefit/risk according to your case

Alternatives

  • Virtual colonoscopy (CT colonography): useful if colonoscopy is incomplete or contraindicated, but does not allow biopsies or polyp removal

Costs and Insurance

  • Fees vary depending on the procedure (exam alone, biopsies, polyp removal)
  • Receipt provided for reimbursement
